Jewellery Size Guide

Choosing the correct size is important for comfort, proportion and long-term wear. This guide is intended to help you select the right size for rings, bracelets, bangles, necklaces, chains and object-led jewellery.

Sampson Mordan & Co.® rings are supplied in UK ring sizes. International size conversions are approximate and may vary according to measuring method, ring width and individual fit preference.

1. Ring Size Guide

For the most accurate result, we recommend having your finger measured professionally. If you are measuring at home, please use the intended finger and hand, as ring size can vary between fingers and between left and right hands.

When measuring, please note:

  • Measure at normal room temperature.
  • Fingers may be slightly larger in the evening, in warmer weather or after exercise.
  • A ring should feel secure but comfortable, passing over the knuckle without excessive force.
  • Wider rings may feel closer than narrow rings and may require a slightly larger size.
  • Stacking rings can alter the fit when worn together.
  • Signet rings, shaped rings and open rings may require particular fit consideration.

2. Measuring an Existing Ring

If you already own a ring that fits well, measure the internal diameter of the ring in millimetres. The measurement should be taken across the inside of the ring, from one inner edge to the opposite inner edge.

Please ensure the ring being measured is round and has not become distorted through wear. Even a small difference in measurement can affect the final size.

3. Measuring Your Finger

If measuring your finger at home, use a narrow strip of paper or non-stretch thread. Wrap it around the base of the intended finger, mark where it meets, then measure the length in millimetres. This gives an approximate internal circumference.

This method should be treated as a guide only. For valuable, made-to-order, vintage or difficult-to-resize pieces, we recommend contacting Client Care before ordering.

5. Ring Resizing

Some rings may be suitable for resizing, while others may not. Resizing may be limited or unsuitable where a ring includes stones, engraving, enamel, pattern, hallmarks, unusual construction or a continuous design around the band.

Vintage and antique rings should be considered carefully before resizing, as alteration may affect originality, condition, value or structural integrity.

6. Bracelets and Bangles

To measure for a bracelet, wrap a tape measure around the wrist where the bracelet will sit. Add a small allowance according to the desired fit.

  • Close fit: add approximately 1 cm.
  • Comfortable fit: add approximately 1.5–2 cm.
  • Loose fit: add approximately 2.5 cm or more.

For bangles, the internal diameter is especially important. A bangle must pass over the hand as well as sit comfortably on the wrist. Product pages will include measurements where available.

7. Necklaces and Chains

Necklace position varies according to neck size, chain style, pendant weight and personal preference. The following lengths are commonly used for Sampson Mordan & Co. pendant necklaces.

18 inches45.7 cmClassic everyday length
20 inches50.8 cmSlightly lower on the chest

Where a product is offered in several chain lengths, the available options will be shown on the product page.

8. Pendants, Motifs and Object Proportions

Many Sampson Mordan & Co. pieces are object-led, including T-bars, keys, seals, fobs, lockets, charms and gentlemen’s accessories. Product pages will include approximate dimensions, usually in millimetres or centimetres, to help judge scale and proportion.

For vintage pieces, dimensions may vary slightly due to age, wear, hand finishing, previous repair or the natural character of the object.

9. Vintage and One-of-One Pieces

Vintage, antique and one-of-one pieces may not be available in multiple sizes. Some items can be adjusted, resized or adapted; others should remain as found.

Where size is critical, please contact us before ordering. We can advise whether adjustment may be possible and whether alteration is appropriate for the item.
